IOM Partners with WonderWoman Nigeria to Launch “Plastics for Pads” Initiative
On September 15th, 2025, a powerful partnership for planet and people came to life as WonderWoman Nigeria officially launched the Plastics for Pads initiative in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at their Abuja office.
The launch began with a sensitization and awareness session for IOM cleaners and staff. Together, we explored the often-overlooked link between plastic pollution and period poverty which are two challenges that disproportionately affect women and girls.
A key moment of the launch was the unveiling and placement of new collection containers across various floors of the IOM office as well the large station within their compound. These containers were designed for:
• Plastic
• Aluminium
• Metal
• Glass
• Paper & Cardboard
• E-waste
This setup marks the beginning of a shared commitment: one where every bottle, can, and piece of scrap becomes a step toward cleaner communities and healthier futures for girls and women.
The beneficiaries of the Plastics for Pads initiative will be girls and women living in IOM-supported IDP camps in Benue State, before expanding the project scope with time.
For many residents of the IDP camps IOM is working in, access to menstrual products remains a monthly struggle. Through this initiative, recyclable waste collected at the IOM office will be converted into pads, providing practical relief, dignity, and consistency for displaced women and girls.
The collaboration between WonderWoman Nigeria and IOM UN Migration Nigeria reinforces a shared commitment to:
• Environmental sustainability
• Women’s health and dignity
• Community-driven solutions
• Practical interventions that uplift vulnerable groups
Together, we are proving that small changes, when multiplied, create meaningful impact.
As the Plastics for Pads project unfolds, we look forward to deepening this partnership, expanding our reach, and showing what is possible when organizations come together for women, the environment, and future generations. Because dignity should never be a luxury.
And waste should never be wasted.
